Welterweight contender Jake Ellenberger looks to halt the hype train of his upcoming UFC on FOX 8 opponent, Rory MacDonald, dead in its tracks.
“The Juggernaut” has been actively engaging MacDonald in a Twitter war in recent weeks and continued the war of words in an interview with MMA Fighting on Tuesday.
"I haven't said anything that wasn't true," Ellenberger said about the pre-fight trash talk. "My message to Rory was pretty clear. ... This isn't a Tears for Fears lookalike contest. All I said to him is prepare for some horizontal television time and I meant it."
Ellenberger has won eight of his past nine fights, including brutal knockouts of divisional staples Mike Pyle, Jake Shields and Nate Marquardt.
MacDonald is in the midst of a 4-fight win streak, having his only professional loss (in 15 fights) came to former UFC interim welterweight champ Carlos Condit back in June 2011.
Ellenberger has argued that MacDonald’s biggest wins inside the cage, over Nate Diaz and BJ Penn, have found their greatest success at lightweight and therefore “Ares” reputation mostly comes from media hype.
Nevertheless, the majority of major MMA media outlets have MacDonald ranked ahead of Ellenberger. The UFC’s official rankings list MacDonald as the number 3 welterweight in the world, with Ellenberger right behind him at number 4.
MacDonald responded succinctly to Ellenberger’s taunting, indicating that he wants his performance in the cage to do the talking on July 27.
"I don't really care," MacDonald told MMA Fighting. "It doesn't really bother me either way, I don't really care about the disrespect or whatever. I just get in there and fight my fight. If they suffer, they suffer. I don't really care if they're nice or if they're an a--hole."
UFC on FOX 8 takes place at the Key Arena in Seattle, Washington and MacDonald vs. Ellenberger serves as the card’s co-main event.
