Jake Ellenberger vs. Tarec Saffiedine Targeted for January Event in Singapore

Two of the hottest names in the UFC’s welterweight division are set to lock horns at the UFC’s scheduled event in Singapore early next year.

Long-time contender Jake Ellenberger and former Strikeforce champ Tarec Saffiedine have verbally agreed to square off at a January 4 event in Singapore, with the venue and broadcast terms yet to be determined.

MMA Junkie reported the potential bout on Saturday.

Ellenberger, the fourth ranked welterweight in the UFC’s official rankings, has won eight of his past 10 bouts, though has come up short in title eliminator bouts against Martin Kampmann and Rory MacDonald.

Meanwhile, Saffiedine enters the bout on the strength of a four-fight win streak, though will have been on the shelf for nearly a year by the time he meets Ellenberger inside the Octagon.

“The Sponge” upset Nate Marquardt for the Strikeforce welterweight strap in January, peppering his foe with effective leg kicks throughout the bout, and was briefly linked to a bout with Robbie Lawler at UFC on FOX 8.

However, an undisclosed injury forced the Team Quest mainstay out of the bout.

While his long period of inactivity has forced him out of the UFC’s official rankings, most media outlets have the 27-year-old Belgian striker between 10 and 15 among active 170-pounders.

Will Ellenberger’s wrestling advantage decide this bout or will Saffiedine’s underrated takedown defense and dynamic striking be enough to win another big matchup?
