Jake Shields Submits Ryan Ford in WSOF Debut, Wants Jon Fitch Next

Decorated Cesar Gracie Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Jake Shields needed less than three rounds to submit journeyman Ryan Ford at World Series of Fighting 14 Saturday night.

While “The Real Deal” managed to drop Shields early with a stiff jab, he did not pursue the highly-regarded grappler to the ground.

Although the idea made sense in theory, Ford would soon regret not pouncing on his opponent with strikes, as Shields would find the takedown shortly thereafter before securing mount.

Looking like a fish out of water, Ford ate some punches on the mount before giving up his back.

The Canadian striker showed above average submission defense for a brief period of time, Shields still managed to expertly lock up a rear-naked choke to end the bout early.

Initially refusing to callout his next opponent, color commentator Bas Rutten coaxed Shields into asking for fellow ex-UFC title challenger Jon Fitch next.

He showed respect for his former training partner, but also made it clear he wanted to “kick his ass.”

Fitch was set to make his WSOF debut against Shields at WSOF 11 in July, but Shields withdrew from the bout at the last minute due to a shoulder injury.

Shields is now the winner in three of his past four fights, with a 4-1(1) mark in his last six matchups.

Meanwhile, the submission loss snaps a six-fight win streak for Ford.
