Fan favorite Jason “Mayhem” Miller was charged with one count of misdemeanor vandalism by the Orange County (California) District Attorney on Wednesday, according to a report by TMZ.
If by some off chance you haven’t heard, Miller was arrested last month when he was found naked, reclining on a couch, on the second floor of the Mission Hills Church in Mission Viejo.
When police discovered Mayhem, who was apparently coherent, they found a fire extinguisher sprayed on the first and second floor, books scattered about, and broken windows and pictures.
Obviously, the former host of MTV’s “Bully Beatdown” lived up to his nickname. Believe it or not, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt could face up to one year in jail if convicted, MMA Junkie reported.
Of course, that’s not very likely; probation is a far more likely scenario. What’s the point? Mayhem’s fight career has essentially been read its last rites and buried due to this incident.
Now to be fair, Miller said he was retired after he was soundly defeated by C.B. Dollaway at UFC 146 in May. He was cut from the UFC for the second time after the loss, so while it wasn’t hard to believe, it also seemed like a rash decision.
Remember when BJ Penn retired? Or how about when Matt Hamill hung up the gloves? Those are just two recent examples, recall that Randy Couture “retired” for the first time back in 2006.
The point is, fighters love to fight, and retirements don’t always stick in this sport.
I think the ex-Strikeforce title contender would’ve been fighting in the Bellator, ONE FC, or worst case scenario, Shark Fights cards of the world by 2013. Before he got arrested, that is. Even if by some miraculous chance Mayhem ended up getting acquitted of the charge, everyone is going to assume they know what happened at the Mission Hills Church on Aug. 13.
That, and the fact that Miller has never won a big fight in Strikeforce or the UFC, makes him damaged goods.
Here’s hoping Mayhem can get his life together and put this arrest far, far behind him by 2013.
