Jon Jones: I’d Like to Fight Heavyweight Champ Cain Velasquez ‘Within the Next Year’

Maybe fight fans should still hold out some hope over the prospect of a superfight in 2014.

During a recent question and answer session with fans, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones said he is eyeing a fight with heavyweight titleholder Cain Velasquez during sometime in 2014.

"I think that’s going to happen within the next two years - I’ll go up to heavyweight, permanently," Jones said when addressing a question about changing weight classes. "But I am looking to take a superfight sooner or later, within the next year. So, yeah I’m excited for it.”

“I’ve been really thinking about me and Cain Velasquez going at it. It would be huge for the sport. He’s definitely the toughest guy in that division, and he’s not that big, so I think it would a really entertaining fight. Don’t be surprised if you see that sooner or later."

Jones is currently riding a 10-fight win streak and is set to next defend his title against Glover Teixeira in March or April at a yet to be determined event.

The youngest champion in UFC history has notched eight finishes during that 30-month time frame, as well as a company record of six straight title defenses at 205 pounds, and hasn’t faced much of a challenge outside of his recent outing against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 in September.

On the other hand, Velasquez boasts a four-fight win steak, including three TKOs, and has avenged his only career loss to Junior dos Santos twice.

Velasquez is tentatively scheduled to meet Fabricio Werdum sometime in late winter or early spring, though the bout is yet to be formally announced.

Could we be treated to an epic heavyweight showdown between Jones and Velasquez sometime in 2014 or will the UFC opt to delay the potential blockbuster matchup?
