UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has been oozing confidence ahead of his title fight with Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 165 this Saturday.
Speaking with FOX Los Angeles, “Bones” slammed Gustafsson about his only career loss to now-teammate Phil Davis:
“Phil Davis took his soul, took his heart, took his will to fight away in under five minutes," Jones said. "He tapped out with less than 10 seconds left.”
“I think he was being choked for only 2 seconds, so that showed me that he got claustrophobic in there, he was uncomfortable, basically his will to fight was over. That tells me a lot about his character and what type of heart he has.”
Gustafsson lost to Davis at UFC 112 in April 2010, tapping out to an anaconda choke with just five seconds left in the first round.
Since then, “The Mauler” has rallied back with six straight victories, including four stoppages, the second best active streak in the UFC’s 205-pound division behind Jones.
Additionally, Davis and Gustafsson are now teammates at Alliance MMA in Chula Vista California, indicating that would only rematch one another if the championship gold was on the line.
Meanwhile, the champion enters this fight on a nine-fight win streak, capable of breaking Tito Ortiz’s record of five consecutive UFC light heavyweight title defenses with a win over his Swedish counterpart this weekend.
Will Jones continue his reign of dominance atop the light heavyweight division or will Gustafsson’s rangy, unorthodox striking be enough pull off the massive upset?
