To say that UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo disagrees with top contender Chad Mendes’ recent statement that he’s ducking him just might be the understatement of the year.
In a lengthy letter initially sent to Brazilian media outlet Combate, “Scarface” accused Mendes of being a coward and using performance-enhancing drugs.
“Concerning my injuries, maybe I have so many because I’m probably not taking the same ‘supplements’ you take. I have injuries because I work very hard to beat your ass as I did last time,” one excerpt of the letter says.
“And I think you remember well, and have nightmares about it to this day. I did all the necessary medical tests, but if now you are also a doctor, I can send the exams for you to evaluate. Maybe you could prescribe one of your supplements for me to get better faster?”
“I fought your coach (Urijah Faber) in your home (Sacramento), fought at Mark Hominick’s home in front of 55,000 fans, I fought in Japan and Europe. And now you tell me you want to be the champion? A champion doesn’t choose opponents or where the fight is going to be. And now I ask you, who’s the real p****?”
Aldo and Mendes first squared off at UFC 142 in January 2012, where the champ scored a first round knockout with a vicious knee strike.
The pair was set to rematch at UFC 176 on August 2, but the event was ultimately cancelled when Aldo withdrew due to a shoulder/neck injury.
The UFC has since stated that Aldo vs. Mendes II will likely take place in October, but if Aldo isn’t ready to go, company CEO Lorenzo Fertitta stated an interim title bout is a possibility.
