Jose Aldo: ‘Randy Couture Fought Until He Was 50 and You Say He Was Clean?’

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo believes testosterone replacement therapy has a place in MMA, but that doesn’t mean everyone uses the medical treatment appropriately.

"I don’t see the problem with using TRT," Aldo told Brazilian media outlet Tatame. "Everybody uses [steroids], from the champion to the newcomer.”

“I believe we [from Nova Uniao] are the only ones that don’t do that, because Andre (Pederneiras) was always against steroids. I think it’s wrong to criticize someone who came forward and said they take TRT."

Despite competing at 145-pounds for all but one of his  24 professional fights, “Scarface” is said to walk around north of 170 pounds on a normal day, so it makes sense that his name has never come up in a conversation about performance-enhancing drugs.

Still, his support of the controversial treatment is intriguing, given that his Brazilian countryman Vitor Belfort is oft-criticized for allegedly abusing TRT.

Even more thought-provoking is the fact that Aldo called out UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, who used TRT and competed in MMA until he was 47-years-old.

"Americans always used that," he said. "Randy Couture fought until he was 50, and you say he was clean? If the doctors prescribe you and you’re on the limits, OK, I see no problem. If I need that one day, I will use TRT too.”

In 30 professional fights, Couture was never accused of using performance-enhancing drugs and was not a competitor known for having an overly ripped or muscular physique.

Are Aldo’s claims completely out of left field and off base or is he realistic in stating that it’s impossible for someone to be competitive in MMA in their late 40s without bending the rules?
