While UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo again successfully defended his title at UFC 163 this weekend, defeating Chan-Sung Jung by TKO in the fourth round.
However, just a couple short months ago, “Scarface” was supposed to be taking on former WEC lightweight titleholder Anthony Pettis.
Unfortunately, that high-profile bout never came to fruition as Pettis suffered a knee injury in June, with “The Korean Zombie” more than happy to fill in for him.
Andres Pederneiras, Aldo’s head coach, speaking on the Brazilian radio show “Mundo de Luta” Sunday, accused “Showtime” of faking an injury to avoid fighting his prized pupil.
"In my opinion, [Pettis] never got hurt. He realized he'd never make weight (at 145 pounds), that it wasn't as easy as he thought it would be."
Pettis, who has publicly denied faking the injury in the past, spoke to MMA Fighting through his jiu-jitsu coach Diego Moraes and said he still has every intention of battling his Brazilian counterpart in the near future.
"It's stupid of him to say something like that. It was a dream fight for me. My injury was real and the UFC took me from the fight. I hope to win my next fight and fight Aldo at 145 pounds."
The Roufusport standout is just a few weeks away from his first shot at UFC gold, as he has a long-awaited rematch with reigning lightweight champ Benson Henderson at UFC 164, set for August 31 in Pettis’ hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Pettis won a close decision against “Bendo” to capture the WEC lightweight title back in December 2010.
Despite having his UFC debut spoiled by Clay Guida in June 2011, Pettis has bounced back with three-straight wins, including back-to-back knockouts of perennial contenders Joe Lauzon and Donald Cerrone.
