Former Strikeforce champion Muhammed Lawal has a chance to wear gold inside another major promotion, but he will have to avenge the most brutal loss of his career to do so.
“King Mo” battles Emanuel Newton at Bellator 106, with the interim 205-pound title on the line.
Newton scored shocking upset over Lawal in February, knocking the heavy-handed wrestler out cold with a spinning back fist mid-way through the first round.
Appearing on Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour on Monday, Lawal made it clear that the rematch is personal and he feels bad for anyone who expects Newton to win again.
"F*** him," said Lawal. "F*** him and f*** everybody else that rides with him. I'm going to f*** him up, Lawal said … That spinning backfist was a joke, you know what I'm saying? It's not happening.”
“He's running his mouth like I was being disrespectful toward him, which I never have been … I never said a bad thing about that dude during the fight. He's going to hear a lot during the fight. You're going to hear me talk shit to him, put it like that. Hell yeah, man. F*** him. Straight up."
He later stated that this matchup is about “money and revenge,” making it clear this one is personal.
Since the loss, Lawal scored back-to-back knockouts over Seth Petruzelli and Jacob Noe, winning the Bellator 2013 Summer Series Light Heavyweight Tournament.
After a close split decision loss to current Bellator champ, Atila Vegh, last July, Newton rallied back to win three straight fights, making him the winner of Bellator’s Season 8 Light Heavyweight Tournament.
The rematch goes down on November 2 on Bellator’s first pay-per-view event. The event is headlined by another light heavyweight title between two former UFC champions in Tito Ortiz and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson.
