Matt Riddle: Pro Wrestling Could Be ‘My Shot to Make it’

UFC veteran Matt Riddle says he might be trading in the four-ounce gloves and board shorts for spandex and high-laced boots as the 13-fight MMA veteran says his next chapter will involve the pro wrestling ring.

As MMA Fighting first reported, Riddle, who has fought just twice since February 2013, “Deep Waters” has begun training pro wrestling – along with his life Lisa - for the past two weeks.

"I did it for a while. It wasn't something I wanted to do, it was something I was good at. They wanted me to fight at 170 or 185 pounds. When I get below 190, my kidneys hurt, my lower back hurts, it's not safe for my body,” Riddle explained.

“I looked in the mirror four months ago. I was tired of cutting weight, getting sick, I got the (WWE) network for $9.99 and started reliving the Attitude Era and got that spark that I've been missing since I was 20. I knew I could make money doing that.”

Training in Paulsboro, New Jersey’s heralded Monster Factory school, Matt Riddle is a former amateur wrestler who ended up appearing on season 7 of The Ultimate Fighter with no formal fight training after wrestling at East Stroudsburg University.

Despite losing in the quarterfinals of the reality series, Riddle fought his first 12 bouts under the UFC banner, compiling a 7-3(2) record.

Riddle’s recent inactivity as a fighter came after failing two drug tests for marijuana in an eight-month span between mid-2012 and early 2013.

Despite being signed by Bellator last May, injuries forced him out of two consecutive bouts, which led to his release from the promotion.

The 28-year-old’s last matchup was a submission victory over Michael Kuiper under the Titan Fighting Championships banner in February, forcing him to tap to a guillotine choke in the second round.
