Two professional fighters with at least 25 wins inside the cage were released from the UFC on Friday afternoon.
Melvin Guillard, a perennial dark horse lightweight contender, was released after posting a paltry 2-5(1) in his past eight fights.
While “The Young Assassin” scored a definitive knockout over former Ultimate Fighter winner Mac Danzig as recently as July, he fought Ross Pearson to a no contest and lost a clear cut decision to Michael Johnson since then.
Guillard, who has recently gotten a reputation for being unable to stick with one fight team, looked like he was well on his way to a title shot when he rattled off five straight wins between February 2010 and July 2011.
However, he then dropped back-to-back submission losses (via rear naked chokes) to highly-regarded submissions specialists Joe Lauzon and Jim Miller and hasn’t looked the same since.
Meanwhile, Menjivar is cut after losing three straight bouts inside the Octagon, most recently dropping a decision to Hatsu Hioki earlier this month in a featherweight contest.
“The Pride of El Salvador” has fought as light as bantamweight (135 pounds) and as heavy as welterweight in his 37-fight career.
While he has fought some of the best in the world, he lacks a signature win over a household name after over 13 years in the fight game.
The managers of both Guillard and Menjivar, respectively, said they will be pursuing a deal with other fight promotions. MMA Fighting was the first media outlet to report on the latest UFC releases.
