At “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 16 Finale Saturday, a heavily-anticipated match up between lightweights Melvin Guillard and Jamie Varner was cancelled at the last minute when he did not receive clearance from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
According to a report from MMA Junkie Saturday night, Varner woke up sick on Saturday and was vomiting in the locker room as he prepared for the bout, forcing the commission to cancel the bout.
“The Young Assassin” told Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show that it was fear, not illness or a bad weight cut, that got the best of Varner on this occasion.
“I think it was a little bit of fear, a little bit of nerves and it got the best of him…I get undressed out of my suit and I put on my fight gear and I’m warming up now…and not even 15, 20 minutes later, the commissioner walks in and says, ‘Melvin, I think your fight might get scratched.’
Guillard also stated that he overheard Varner’s camp complain that the Blackzilian team member may be greasing, further backing his claim:
“I’m in the locker room getting my rules meeting from the ref, and the end of that rules meeting was a little disturbing because the referee was like, ‘His corner wanted me to let you know that are a little concerned about you greasing.’ I’m like, ‘What? I’ve done nothing but respect this guy and his camp,’” Guillard said.
“I’ve said nothing bad about him or his camp and (they’re) going to sit there and try to falsely accuse me of possibly greasing?”
Guillard did have a high-profile win over Roger Huerta wiped from his record by the Mississippi State Athletic Commission, changing the result to a no-contest as a result of him greasing.
However, the incident was in March 2005 and is the only instance where the heavy-handed wrestler was accused of greasing in his 44-fight professional career.
Varner is yet to publicly speak out about his seemingly sudden illness and his fight with Guillard will take place at UFC 155, set for Dec. 29 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
