Perennial UFC Welterweight Contender Martin Kampmann Taking Hiatus from the Sport

After a 3-4 record in his past seven fights, UFC welterweight contender Martin Kampmann has announced that he plans on taking a hiatus from the sport.

Specifically, “The Hitman” told MMA Junkie Radio he made the decision to take “a long break.”

“I’ve had a lot of tough fights, and even the ones I win, I sometimes make them tough for myself,” Kampmann said on the radio show. “I’m just taking a long break. No rush to get back in the cage. Let my body recover and get good. I’m just going to kick back, and whenever I feel like coming back, I’ll come back.”

“I enjoy fighting, but I’ve just had my 10-year anniversary as a professional fighter,” Kampmann said. “I feel a little burned out right now. That’s why I’m taking a break. I don’t want to get in there unless I feel like it. I love training, I love fighting, but I want to have the fire again to go in.”

Kampmann posted a 5-2 record between January 2010 and June 2012, though many pundits believed the Danish brawler was robbed in his decision losses to Jake Shields and Diego Sanchez.

Despite the stroke of bad luck, Kampmann lost a title eliminator bout to Johny Hendricks at UFC 154 last November and then lost a rematch to Carlos Condit at UFC Fight Night 27 in August.

He lost both bouts via knockout and was not particularly competitive in either bout, though he earned “Fight of the Night” honors in his loss to Condit.

Kampmann is currently ranked the no. 10 welterweight in the world and does not currently have a fight lined up.
