Phil Davis: I’m Going to Submit Lyoto Machida

Highly-touted grappler Phil Davis apparently isn’t worried about the stellar takedown defense of his upcoming UFC 163 opponent, Lyoto Machida.

After back-to-back wins over top 10 light heavyweights, it seemed academic that “The Dragon” would get the next title shot, despite already getting choked unconscious by champion Jon Jones at UFC 140 in December 2011.

Machida ended up getting passed over by Alexander Gustafsson, who now meets “Bones” at UFC 165 in September.

As far as “Mr. Wonderful” is concerned, Machida won’t get passed him to build a case for another shot at UFC gold.

Check out what Davis said in a pre-fight interview with UFC.com:

“I'm gonna stick to my bread and butter. If his tricks are not working that night, it will be a rough night. My plan is to go back to Rio and get another submission win and be able to build my legacy that way."

Davis has won two fights in a row against Brazilian fighters Wagner Prado and Vinny Magalhaes and he hopes the third time’s a charm against Machida on August 3.

Coincidentally, Davis is the only fighter to have defeated upcoming title challenger Gustafsson, tapping him with an anaconda choke at UFC 112 in April 2010.

However, the only other elite 205-pounder Davis has faced is Rashad Evans, who pounded on the former All-American wrestler for five rounds at UFC on FOX 2 in January of last year.

Will Davis be able to shock the world and tap one of the best game planners out there in Machida, while he’s in front of his Brazilian friends, family and fans at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro?
