Report: Boxing Match Between ‘Rampage’ Jackson and Roy Jones Jr. Expected in December

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney is putting all his chips on the table on December 28, preparing to go head-to-head with the UFC on pay-per-view.

One of Bellator’s biggest recent signings, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, a former PRIDE and UFC champ, is said to headline the show in a boxing match against Roy Jones, Jr., according to a report my MMA Junkie.

Jones Jr. is incredibly still active at 44-years-old, boasting a 56-8 professional boxing record and capturing various titles across four different weight classes.

Of course, neither Jackson nor Jones Jr. is at the pinnacle of their career anymore. Jackson has lost three in a row, while RJJ is just 2-3 in his past five bouts.

The shoe-in boxing hall of famer was linked to a bout with former long-time UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva, but those plans came to a screeching halt when “The Spider” was knocked out cold by Chris Weidman at UFC 162 earlier this month.

Since their inception in 2008, Bellator has never hosted a pay-per-view event, but has gained a steady and loyal following in the past couple years.

The company, who is owned by Viacom, will have their work cut out for them though, as UFC 168 boasts the Silva-Weidman rematch, as well as a women’s bantamweight title fight between Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate.

Bellator would likely employ the services of at least two of their three most recognizable champions, Pat Curran (145), Michael Chandler (155) or Ben Askren (170), though all of which pale in comparision to a name like Anderson Silva.

Is stepping up to the plate to compete with the UFC a good move by Viacom/Bellator or is hosting a PPV opposite Zuffa LLC going to be a huge waste of time and money?
