Report: Former Bellator Champ Ben Askren Set to Sign with ONE FC

Looks like former Bellator Welterweight champion Ben Askren is extremely close to signing a deal with Asia-based fight promotion ONE FC, multiple media outlets reported on Tuesday.

Bloody Elbow first reported that the deal was official, but MMA Fighting later refuted that report, though stating a deal was imminent.

After being released by Bellator last month, fight fans thought it was a forgone conclusion “Funky” would be picked up by the UFC.

However, UFC President Dana White came out and said he had “no interest” in the former Olympic-level wrestler since he hadn’t fought top-tier competition yet.

The undefeated (12-0) fighter received an offer from the World Series of Fighting shortly after his release, but has since turned that offer down.

This scraps any plans of a potential bout between new WSOF competitor Rousimar Palhares and Askren.

Askren, a proud member of the Roufusport fight team in his home state of Wisconsin, tweeted on Sunday he would begin ending fight camps at Evolve MMA, based in Singapore.

“To clarify I will be starting my camps at @Roufusport then finishing them at @EvolveMMA This should be an awesome new chapter to my life,” he wrote.

This led to widespread speculation that Askren would be signing with ONE FC and it appears that rumor is true.

ONE FC president Victor Cui told MMA Fighting “We will have some huge news to announce in the next few days,” more than likely pointing to the acquisition of Askren.

Askren would be a welcome addition to the company’s roster, as only a handful of their 17 welterweight fighters have experience outside of overseas-based promotions and none have ever captured a major MMA championship in North America.
