Ronaldo Souza vs. Gegard Mousasi II Co-Headlines UFC 176 in Los Angeles

Two surging contenders in the UFC’s middleweight division will square off for a second time in their careers at UFC 176 on August 2 in a bout with serious title implications.

Submission specialist Ronald Souza is set to rematch crisp striker Gegard Mousasi at the Los Angeles, California pay-per-view, as the Los Angeles Daily News reported this morning.

The pair, both former Strikeforce titleholders, first met under the DREAM banner in September 2008, where “The Dreamcatcher” scored an early upset by knocking out his Brazilian counterpart with an upkick.

Since then, both fighters have gotten used to having their hand raised, as “Jacare” has posted 10-1(1) record since then, while Mousasi has accumulated a 11-2(1) ledger in the same five-year time frame.

Souza is a perfect 6-0 since joining the UFC ranks in March 2012, with five of those victories coming via a stoppage.

His only decision win was his most recent performance against Francis Carmont at UFC Fight Night 36 in February.

The highly regarded Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt had elbow surgery after that fight to remove bone spurs, but has since resumed training and is ready to go.

On the other hand, Mousasi is 5-1 in his past six bouts, with his only loss coming in a hard-fought decision against top contender Lyoto Machida.

In his latest outing, Mousasi outclassed perennial contender Mark Munoz at UFC Fight Night 41, submitting him with a rear-naked choke in the first round.

According to the UFC’s official rankings, Souza is the No. 4 middleweight in the world, while Mousasi cracks the list at No. 7.

UFC 176 is headlined by a featherweight title bout between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes, another rematch where the champ won their first encounter in definitive fashion.
