Rory MacDonald on Teammate GSP: ‘I Don’t Think He’s Gone for Good’

UFC welterweight contender Rory MacDonald doesn’t think UFC welterweight champ/Tristar Gym teammate Georges St-Pierre has seen his last days inside the Octagon.

“Ares” shared his opinion on the matter during Monday’s edition of Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour.

"I don't think he's gone for good," MacDonald said about GSP. "But maybe he needs some time."

"People have no idea the kind of pressure it is to fight, and I have no idea what kind of pressure it to hold the belt for (six years)," he added.

At UFC 167 last Saturday, St-Pierre improved his win streak to 12, also recording his ninth straight successful title defense, when he defeated Johny Hendricks via split decision.

Despite the impressive notch on his resume, the performance has generally been panned by critics as it was nearly universally believed by pundits that Hendricks did enough to win the bout.

During his post-fight interview with color commentator Joe Rogan, “Rush” said that he needed some time off to deal with personal issues, choosing not to elaborate beyond that he felt like he was “going crazy.”

MacDonald also fought on the card, getting upset by Strikeforce import Robbie Lawler.

The 24-year-old rising star, who is still ranked no. 4 in the UFC’s official welterweight rankings despite the recent loss, told Helwani that he agreed with the “Ruthless” one earning the split decision.

In fact, he even stated that he needed to lose a high-profile bout like that to regain his passion for fighting, something he believed to be absent in his bouts with BJ Penn and Jake Ellenberger.

Will GSP grace fight fans with at least one more appearance inside the cage or will the French-Canadian superstar decide now is the time to hang up the gloves permanently?
