While it isn’t full-time employment, embattled former UFC fighter Rousimar Palhares will get a paycheck to compete next month.
Toquinho will step on the mats to face fellow accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Dean Lister, at the World Jiu-Jitsu Expo next month, GracieMag reported on Tuesday.
The event will be held over two days, on November 9 and 10, in Long Beach, California.
“I have great admiration for ‘Toquinho’ as an athlete, (I) met him during ADCC 2011 I England and I know he is a very good person,” Lister told GracieMag in Portuguese.
“It is an injustice what they are doing with him in the MMA scene. It would be an honor to fight him at the 2013 (World Jiu-Jitsu) Expo.”
Renzo Gracie, the event’s promoter, shared Lister’s sentiment when he spoke to MMA Fighting.
"I already wanted to get ‘Toquinho’ in the event, but wanted even more after everybody started criticizing him and I wouldn’t let that happen," Gracie said. "He’s a great guy, an incredible grappler, and I respect him a lot. He represents jiu-jitsu all the time."
Palhares was cut from the UFC after holding onto a heel hook against Mike Pierce at UFC Fight Night 29 earlier this month, with Bellator and the World Series of Fighting subsequently stating they are not interested in signing the dangerous Brazilian grappler.
This was the second time the 33-year-old muscle-bound fighter was caught hanging onto a submission inside the Octagon.
On top of that, he also failed a post-fight drug test for elevated testosterone after getting knocked out by Hector Lombard at UFC on FX 6 in December.
Needless to say, Palhares is in the worst stretch of his professional career.
However, his relationship with Renzo gives him at least one more chance to show he really isn’t a dirty fighter.
