Bellator President Scott Coker says that in the event that WWE heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar doesn’t sign a new deal with the organization this spring, his promotion would love to host his return to the cage.
Coker explained his thoughts on the ex-UFC heavyweight champ on Monday’s edition of Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour (transcription per MMA Fighting).
"I would say, look, any fighter that's out there or any star athlete - not star athlete in the sense of a baseball player, but like a Brock Lesnar - that really wants to fight, we're going to have a conversation with them,” Coker said.
“Because if they can move the needle, we're going to want them on Spike TV. I think that he's a big needle mover. So, I think that he still has a lot of star power, but to come back and say, 'Hey, I want to train, I want to commit, I want fight', that's going to be a big commitment on his part.”
Coker said that Bellator has already had internal discussions about Lesnar, which will likely resume in January, though no one has reached out to the former two-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler or his camp.
Lesnar makes rare appearances on WWE programming, yet to seen since August despite capturing the heavyweight strap in July.
His contract expires in March and rumors have been swirling for months that Lesnar will make his return to mixed martial arts in 2015.
Lesnar hasn’t fought since suffering a first round TKO loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC 141 in December 2011, which shortly after he said he would never step foot inside the Octagon again.
Two weeks ago, UFC President Dana White said that Lesnar would not entertain a contract offer from Bellator, since he would want to fight the best competition in the world if he decided to return – which is found under the UFC banner.
