A Brazilian fight organization in Brazil is attempting to pit a man against a woman in a mixed martial arts fight this Friday, though it seems unlikely the athletic commission will allow the bout to take place.
According to MMA Fighting, Shooto Brazil 45 was set to feature a three-round bantamweight affair between Emerson Falcao and Juliana Velasquez.
"(Shooto President) Andre Pederneiras came up with the idea," Velasquez said. "He asked Team Nogueira for a female fighter and my team believes I’m ready, so I accepted the challenge. My expectations are the best. I’m well trained to get there and win.”
"I’m used to training with man every day. I’m a professional judoka and I know the adrenaline of the competition, I know how to handle this."
Falcao had his first fight in April, losing the bout via submission. Meanwhile, Velasquez would be making her MMA debut against Velasquez.
However, shortly after the bout began to get media attention, Osiris Maia, a member of the Brazilian Mixed Martial Arts Federation, told MMA Fighting he found it very hard to believe the commission would sanction the bout.
"There’s nothing in the rules that specific prohibits a man to fight a woman, but when you interpret the rules you know that both athletes must be in the same level, so there’s no way a man should be allowed to fight a woman," Maia explained.
Maia also indicated the BMMAF does not sanction match ups until a promotion gives them a formal fight card at weigh-ins, which in this case, takes place on Thursday.
Will the first man vs. woman MMA bout take place this week or will better judgment prevail in the end?
