With Frank Mir forced out of his heavily anticipated UFC-Strikeforce crossover bout with Daniel Cormier, another high-profile UFC heavyweight is considering stepping in on short notice.

Fabricio Werdum, speaking with MMA Interviews, stated that he would take a fight with “DC” as long as the UFC made his phone ring and his coach approved (transcription via MMA Mania).

“I talk to my coach Rafael Cordeiro first.  I don’t know. But if maybe if they (the UFC) tries to call me and Rafael says it’s okay, I’ll fight for sure.”

Werdum, a second degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, had the biggest win of his career when he submitted Fedor Emelianenko with a triangle armbar in June 2010. The fight occurred under the Strikeforce banner.

He was the first man to defeat “The Last Emperor” in nearly a decade, though Fedor lost two more fights, to Antonio Silva and Dan Henderson, respectively, after that.

Both Werdum and Cormier were participants in Strikeforce’s Heavyweight Grand Prix, which took place between 2011 and 2012, which Cormier eventually won.

The two never met in the tournament though, as the Brazilian lost a lackluster decision to Alistair Overeem in June of last year, which was a quarterfinal bout. The bout was particularly disappointing since Werdum had submitted “The Demolition Man” under the PRIDE banner in May 2006.

Interestingly, Cormier entered the tournament as a replacement for Overeem when the hulking heavyweight was unceremoniously released from his Strikeforce contract over a dispute when his semi-final bout would take place.

The former Olympic-level wrestler showed he deserved to fight the promotion’s best, knocking out “Bigfoot” Silva before earning a convincing unanimous decision over Josh Barnett in the finals in May.

On paper, Werdum is an intriguing opponent for Cormier, as he has a well-versed submission game and ever-improving Muay Thai skills. Is this a fight that should headline the Nov. 3 Strikeforce event at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Okalahoma City, Oklahoma?
