Strikeforce News: Luke Rockhold Injured, Withdraws from November Card

Strikeforce just can’t seem to catch a break these days.

The promotion’s middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold, has had to withdraw from his upcoming title defense against Lorenz Larkin next month due to a wrist injury. MMA Fighting was the first media outlet to break the news late Sunday evening.

This is the second huge hit the Nov. 3 event, hosted in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has taken in the past month. Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir pulled out of a cross-promotional fight between Daniel Cormier last month due to an injury suffered in training.

Strikeforce is likely now in desperate need to find “DC” a top-tier opponent to keep the card alive.

The news is particularly shocking as it’s the second Strikeforce champion to withdraw from a title fight in the past two weeks. Lightweight title holder Gilbert Melendez was forced out of his Sept. 29 bout with Pat Healy due to a separated shoulder.

Since “El Nino’s” injury occurred during fight week, Strikeforce could not find s suitable replacement and Showtime decided that would not air the card if Melendez wasn’t fighting. This led to the event ultimately being cancelled.

Rockhold won the title from Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in Sept. 2010 and has since successfully defended the strap against Keith Jardine and Tim Kennedy.

Larkin racked up 12-0-1 record as a light heavyweight and made an impressive middleweight debut against Robbie Lawler this past July, winning a lop-sided decision.

Does this latest mishap finally spell the end for Strikeforce or is this something the promotion could easily bounce back from?
