Thiago Alves Out, Mike Pyle in Against Matt Brown At UFC on FOX Sports 1 in August

Another unforeseen injury has changed the dynamic of a heavily-anticipated summer scrap in the Octagon.

Former UFC welterweight title challenger Thiago Alves has withdrawn from his UFC on FOX Sports 1 #1, set for August 17, bout against surging slugger Matt Brown.

Filling in for him will be another welterweight with some serious momentum in Mike Pyle. The official FOX Sports 1 twitter account broke the news on Wednesday.

Alves has been on the shelf for 16 months following a last-minute submission loss to Martin Kampmann at UFC on FX 2 last March.

Following the disappointing mishap, the Brazilian opted to have pectoral surgery to correct an ailing injury. Now, his comeback has been pushed back even further.

At 37-years-old, Pyle is looking to make one more run to the top, riding a four-fight win streak (including three knockouts) heading into the August match up with Brown.

While Pyle has recently found some success with his striking game, his bread and butter is his grappling.

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt has a tricky game off his back and has notched 16 of his 25 career victories via submission.

Meanwhile, “The Immortal” is in the midst of a career renaissance of his own, victorious in his past five bouts, scoring four knockouts in the process.

In a recent interview with Bleacher Report, Brown said he believes he has the perfect style to take out long-reigning welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre and a win over Alves would have certainly given him a realistic argument for a title fight.

While a win over Pyle certainly won’t hurt the Ohio native’s resume, it is hard to imagine a victory here earning Brown a shot at UFC gold.
