Two dark horse middleweight title contenders have a chance to stand out from the rest of the pack when they meet at UFC 178 on September 27.
Tim Kennedy will face off with fellow surging Strikeforce import Yoel Romeo at the fall pay-per-view, hosted in Las Vegas, according to a report from the Las Vegas-Review Journal.
Dating back to December 2007, Kennedy has won 10 of his past 12 matchups, including three straight victories inside the Octagon.
His only two losses were unsuccessful Strikeforce title bids against Luke Rockhold and Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, respectively.
Kennedy, the No. 6 middleweight in the world according to the UFC’s official rankings, is coming off the biggest win of his career when he upset perennial contender Michael Bisping in April.
Romero, a former Olympic silver medalist in freestyle wrestling, has won four straight since joining the UFC ranks in April 2013.
Ranked the No. 11 185-pounder in the UFC’s official rankings, Romero has largely left his takedown-heavy ways behind in favor of trading some leather.
The 37-year-old “Soldier of God” has scored all eight of his professional victories via knockout and has only been beaten once by former Strikeforce light heavyweight champ Rafael Cavalcante.
However, the Cuban slugger has been perfect since dropping down to middleweight.
UFC 178 is headlined by a light heavyweight championship rematch between Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson.
At their first meeting at UFC 165 in September, “Bones” squeaked out a narrow decision win over his Swedish counterpart.
