Highly-decorated Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Vinny Magalhaes captured the inaugural Titan Fighting Championships light heavyweight championship when he submitted veteran Jason Brilz last night.
In a bout that saw Magalhaes control the majority of the action on the ground, Brilz threw some heavy leather to start off the fourth round.
Although it initially looked like his Brazilian counterpart was fading, Magalhaes answered back with clean combinations, landing a head kick that dropped Brilz.
Despite being in side control, Magalhaes, a submission specialist, managed to lock up a modified guillotine that forced his game opponent to tap almost immediately.
Magalhaes, a former M-1 Global light heavyweight titleholder, has now won back-to-back fights via submission since being cut by the UFC about one year ago.
Brilz, who hasn’t walked out to the Octagon since November 2011, earned a shot at the Titan FC belt after four straight wins in the regional scene.
His submission loss to Magalhaes is the first time he’s tapped out in well over a decade, since Vince Fields armbarred him all the way back in September 2001.
After the matchup, Magalhaes said the matchup was “the hardest fight I’ve ever had.”
