UFC 153: Urijah Faber Volunteers Himself and Chad Mendes to Fight Frankie Edgar

Minutes after it was announced that UFC 153 was on life support, with both Jose Aldo and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson being forced off the card due to injuries, a former WEC staple took to Twitter to announce that he wouldn’t mind filling in for Aldo as a late replacement.

Former WEC bantamweight champion, a current staple in the UFC’s bantamweight division, said he wouldn’t made going back up in weight for a fight with Frankie Edgar, who was set to make his featherweight debut against Aldo in the event’s main event.

Faber first flirted with the idea of fighting “The Answer” when responding to a fan’s tweet (https://twitter.com/UrijahFaber):

“Weighed 158 yest“@thesensation82: @danawhite edgar v@UrijahFaber for Interim belt? I'm sure the Cali kid wouldn't mind stepping up weight.”

“The California Kid” then theorized that if the higher ups of the UFC didn’t want him to fight Edgar, his Team Alpha Male teammate, Chad “Money” Mendes, was another good choice. Mendes has fought all 13 of his professional fights at featherweight.

“U know I'm in for a good fight, I'm sure @chadmendes wld b eager 4 that fight @danawhite @ufc @MMAInc @mikeMMAinc sucks 4@josealdojunior”

Later, Faber tweeted a picture of him eating takeout, noting that he wanted to “bulk up” in case he got the call to fight Edgar.

The UFC has not made any formal announcement on whether or not Edgar will still fight at UFC 153 therefore, there is no indication he will fight for an interim featherweight title. The event is set for Oct. 13 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Edgar was a late fill-in for Erik Koch, who was delayed a title shot when Aldo was injured shortly before their scheduled showdown at UFC 149.

Both Faber and Mendes have previously been defeated by Aldo. “Scarface” soundly defeated Faber via unanimous decision at WEC 48 back in April 2010, effectively keeping the former champion at bay with leg kicks and superior striking.

Mendes most recently came up short in a big for Aldo’s UFC title at UFC 142, getting knocked out with a knee in their January Octagon encounter.
