UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva is still dead set on a superfight with his welterweight counterpart Georges St-Pierre … GSP still isn’t so sure though.
Silva, who was in attendance at the Bell Centre to watch St-Pierre defeat interim welterweight title holder Carlos Condit, praised the French-Canadian’s skills and why a bout with him makes sense in a post-fight interview with FUEL TV (via MMA Mania).
"I love it. It was good. Georges is the best fighter. Georges has control from all positions -- the ground [standing] up. I like it. This is a new Georges, I like it. Yeah [I want to fight him next], but it is not my decision. This is Dana [White's] decision. He needs to talk to Georges' manager and talk to me because this is the biggest show in the world. The fans in the UFC love it. Maybe this fight in the story of the UFC. This is my plan, but it is not my decision. I'm here to work for the UFC. I have my plans, Georges has his plans, but [we both] need to talk to Dana and Lorenzo [Fertitta]. That's it."
The 185-pound kingpin is widely considered to be the only pound-for-pound fighter that is better than St-Pierre, so it makes sense that a super fight between the two has been talked about for years.
However, even after his seventh successful title defense, “Rush” was still non-committal in front of his Montreal, Ontario crowd about a showdown with Silva.
"I know that Anderson Silva is here right now. But, I was just focusing on Carlos Condit 100 percent. I need to take some vacation and think about it, to see where I want to take my career. I want to make the best choice for myself, for the UFC and for the fans. But, I want to make sure I make the right choice. I'm going to have a talk with my manager and my entourage about it and we'll see what is going to happen."
GSP has won 10 fights in a row, with his last loss occurring at the hands of Matt Serra UFC 69 in April 2007. He avenged that loss, as well as his only other career loss to Matt Hughes.
On the other hand, Silva has successfully defended his belt a UFC record 10 times and has a perfect 16-0 UFC record.
The ambiguity of this situation ties up both the welterweight and middleweight divisions, despite plenty of contenders in both divisions.
Johny Hendricks defeated perennial 170-pound contender Martin Kampmann in just 46 seconds at UFC 154, scoring a spectacular knockout that has many fans sold he should be the next competitor to battle GSP.
Will GSP vs. Silva ever become a reality or is this fight simply too good to ever be true?
