UFC Contender Jake Shields Fights Leandro ‘Lo’ Nascimento at World Jiu-Jitsu Expo

Resurgent UFC welterweight contender Jake Shields will put his ground game to the test at next month’s World Jiu-Jitsu Expo, hitting the mats with world-renowned black belt Leandro ‘Lo’ Nascimento.

Renzo Gracie, an event organizer, announced Shields would be part of the show last week and tweeted the news that he found an opponent for the Cesar Gracie black belt on Monday night.

“Jake Shields VS Leandro Lo Long Beach Convention Center California November 9th & 10th. @JIUJITSUEXPO,” Gracie wrote.

While he is often criticized for his underdeveloped striking game, Shields is regarded as one of the best grapplers in MMA, scoring a big upset over fellow accomplished black belt Demian Maia at UFC Fight Night 29 earlier this month.

Shields best year on the jiu-jitsu competition scene was 2005 when he was a purple belt, capturing a gold medal at the Pan American Championships and a bronze medal at the Abu Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Submission Wrestling World Championship.

Lo will certainly provide a stiff test in a no-gi jiu-jitsu match, as the Brazilian is a two-time jiu-jitsu world champion, also claiming many other BJJ championships in his home country over top-tier competition.

Shields vs. Lo is scheduled for the second day of the event, November 10, which also features two former UFC fighters in Rousimar Palhares and Jon Fitch.

Palhares is pitted against fellow leg lock specialist Dean Lister, while Fitch while try his luck against a much smaller Paulo Miyao, recognized for a crafty guard and excellent back takes.
