UFC featherweight Matt Grice, who is also a police officer in his home state of Oklahoma, is in an intensive care unit following a car accident Sunday night.
Oklahoma News 9 broke the story first, with the Oklahoma City Police Department since following up with a statement from their department spokesman:
“On Sunday, Sept 8th, at approximately 4pm off-duty Officer Matthew Grice (age 32) was involved in a serious multi-car accident in Shawnee, OK (accident investigated by Oklahoma Highway Patrol). The accident left him in critical condition.
Officer Grice was transported to an Oklahoma City hospital, where his status is currently listed as confidential. The Grice family has asked for privacy as they deal with this sudden and unfortunate situation.
Officer Grice has been with the Oklahoma City Police Department for 5 years.”
Grice underwent brain surgery Sunday night and his condition is day to day, though early reports are that his brain swelling has gone own and his eyes are reacting to light.
After a 1-3 stint with the UFC between April 2007 and July 2009, Grice rattled off four straight wins on the regional scene before getting another shot with the promotion.
The results have been similar for “The Real One” this time, posting just a 1-2 record, though his back-and-forth battle with Dennis Bermudez at UFC 157 in February earned him “Fight of the Night” honors.
Grice was expected to fight Jeremy Larsen at UFC 166, which takes place in Houston, Texas on October 19, but given this unfortunate set of circumstances, it seems to be a certainty that the lifelong Oklahoma native will be removed from the card.
