Looks like 40 is the new 30, at least when it comes to brick-fisted heavyweight Mark Hunt.
“The Super Samoan” headlined UFC Fight Night 52 against fellow portly power puncher Roy Nelson and the two big boys did not disappoint in delivering a hard-hitting slugfest.
Although the first round was competitive, Hunt seemed to be way quicker on the draw throughout the contest and caught Nelson with his guard down in the middle of the second frame.
A vicious uppercut caused “Big Country” to hit the canvas face first and Hunt scored yet another walk-off knockout as the referee immediately dove in to save Nelson from further punishment.
Hunt, who entered the contest as the No. 6 heavyweight in the world – according to the UFC’s official rankings – is now 5-1(1) in his past seven matchups and is once again relevant in the 265-pound division’s title picture.
A former K-1 champ and PRIDE veteran, Hunt also notched his fourth consecutive post-fight bonus with his KO of Nelson: good enough for a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus.
As for Nelson, the fan favorite is now a paltry 1-3 in his past four matchups – with the latest setback being the first time he’s been knocked out inside the Octagon in 13 fights.
At the post-fight press conference, Hunt indicated he has a title run left in him but stopped short of calling out his next opponent.
A title eliminator bout between Hunt and Arlovski makes sense as the fight community awaits the result of the championship bout Cain Velasquez vs. Fabricio Werdum at UFC 180 in November.
