UFC Hoped for Jim Miller vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov, Nate Diaz vs. Donald Cerrone II

As eDraft reported yesterday, the UFC announced Jim Miller vs. Donald Cerrone as the main event for UFC Fight Night 45 on July 16 in Atlantic City.

However, according to new information revealed by MMA Junkie, that wasn't the original plan.

Originally, the UFC hoped to book Miller, a New Jersey native, against undefeated Russian rising star Khabib Nurmagomedov and also sign a rematch between Donald Cerrone and Nate Diaz.

However, neither fight came to fruition for two completely different reasons.

First, Mike Constantino, Nurmagomedov's manager, explained why his client was unavailable for the card.

"We were never offered an opponent but were just asked to fight on that date. At that time, I informed the UFC that it was Ramadan and that Khabib would be unavailable."

Next, Mike Kogan, Nate Diaz's manager disputed the notion that the UFC ever offered the Stockton bad boy the opportunity to compete at the summer show.

"Nobody called me about a Cerrone fight," Kogan said. "I'm not ignoring anybody. I'm pretty sure in my job description it says, 'Don't ignore calls and texts related to people you represent."

Miller expressed an interest in fighting the 22-0 "Eagle" after choking Yancy Medeiros unconscious at UFC 172 last week.

Meanwhile, "Cowboy" Cerrone was riding a six-fight win streak and was on the cusp of a title shot when he met Diaz at UFC 141 in December 2011.

The Greg Jackson's MMA product looked flat-footed and slow throughout the 15-minute affair, getting outboxed by Diaz for the overwhelming majority of the fight.

Fight fans don't get completely gypped though, as Miller and Cerrone have earned 15 "Fight Night" bonuses combined during their UFC tenures and are known to steal the show every time they hit the Octagon.
