UFC Light Heavyweight Wanderlei Silva Planning to Run for Congress in Brazil

An “Axe Murderer” serving in Congress? Sounds impossible, but that’s exactly what former Pride champion Wanderlei Silva plans on doing in 2014.

According to an interview with MMA Fighting, the fan-friendly brawler explained that he is tired of “corrupt politicians” and is following the mantra “if you want something done right, do it yourself.”

"No more corrupt politicians stealing from us," Silva said in a prepared statement.

“This generation (of politicians) needs to go to jail, retire or die. It’s the time for the good people, but we need to do something. It needs to be good for everybody.”

Silva also noted his intention to run with Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) in Parana.

The election for federal deputy, which Silva fancies, takes place on October 5 and the winner will serve a four-year term.

Should he follow through with his political aspirations, the 37-year-old has a busy year ahead of him: coaching season 3 of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil opposite long time rival Chael Sonnen before meeting the “American Gangster” inside the cage after the season concludes.

Silva is 4-4 in his past eight fights and has seen a noticeable decline since he came to the UFC in December 2007, though he had a vintage performance when he knocked out Brian Stann at UFC on FUEL 8 in his most recent bout.
