Despite being adamantly against a super fight with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones just one week ago, pound-for-pound great Anderson Silva is all of a sudden considering the bout if it’s signed at a catchweight.
“The Spider” told SporTV (via CagedInsider.com):
“It isn’t the cash that make me do what I do, I fight because I like it. I don’t know … I wouldn’t like it, but if it’s going to happen it would have to be at catchweight. His belt wouldn’t be on the line. I already have my title, I don’t want my title to be on the line.”
Silva is of course the reigning UFC middleweight champion, defending his belt a record 10 times in a row. Despite entertaining the idea, the Brazilian was clear that a bout with Jones isn’t particularly high on his priority list right now.
“I don’t have such intentions, there isn’t any motive to do so, mostly because there are several people from my team who belong to his weight class,” Silva said.
“But lots of people talk about it, and some of those are UFC employees. It’s obvious, I might say that I don’t want it, but if he (Jones) accepts the money Dana offer him? It’s going to get tough.”
Jones, the youngest champion in UFC history, has successfully defended his title four times since winning the belt from Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 128 in March of last year. He is just one victory away from tying Tito Ortiz’s light heavyweight record of five title defenses in a row.
Despite Silva’s hesitance, UFC president Dana White has guaranteed that he will make the Silva-Jones super fight a reality.
The latest turn of events is interesting, as just last month White told the media and fans that Silva vs. UFC welterweight kingpin Georges St-Pierre was likely.
What bout is more intriguing at this stage in Silva’s career: a super fight with Jones or GSP?
