UFC featherweight contender Chad “Money” Mendes has officially been removed from the UFC 157 card, set for Feb. 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.
Mendes confirmed the news on Twitter Sunday afternoon:
“Well guys it looks like I’m off the Anaheim card. Sucks pretty bad. Ill Keep everyone updated with what I find out. Sorry.”
Mendes was slated to take on Manny Gamburyan, but "The Ultimate Fighter" alumnus had to withdraw from the match up last minute after suffering a fractured elbow and a broken thumb during training.
Since losing a title bid to divisional kingpin Jose Aldo at UFC 142 in January of last year, Mendes has easily knocked out two over-matched opponents in the first year: Cody McKenzie and Yaotzin Meza.
The Team Alpha Male boasts a 13-1 record with his sole loss coming at the hands of “Scarface,” so a third win could feasibly give him the winner of Aldo vs. Anthony Pettis, which goes down on Aug. 3.
Mendes wanted fellow contender Ricardo Lamas to fill in for Gamburyan on short-notice, calling him out on Twitter, but “The Bully” responded by saying he has already agreed to a bout in May.
Even if he didn’t have a mystery opponent waiting in the wings, it seems unlikely that Lamas would have taken the fight on just two weeks notice, especially since he just defeated Erik Koch by TKO at UFC on FOX 6 on Jan. 26.
The UFC has already announced that Josh Neer vs. Court McGee, which is McGee’s first fight at welterweight, will fill the void on the UFC 157 main card.
In an interview with MMAJunkie.com Radio, Mike Roberts, Mendes’ manager, hinted that his star client is already having discussions for a higher profile fight in April.
