The general belief that UFC light heavyweight title contenders Chael Sonnen and Dan Henderson are no longer on good terms was disproved by “The American Gangster” Thursday evening.
Sonnen told MMA Junkie that he has recruited “Hendo” to be an assistant coach on the upcoming season of “The Ultimate Fighter,” indicating that the two have had no hard feelings over Sonnen’s title shot against Jon Jones in April at the conclusion of TUF.
"You've got to understand, what Dan and I have got is like the military," Sonnen said. “Our gym has got an order, and Dan is one of the coaches. He's above me. I don't talk back to Dan, and if Dan wants to say something, that would be the way it is.”
"We're on great terms (and) we've always been on great terms," he added, also indicating that Henderson will corner him against Jones in the spring.
Henderson was scheduled to face Jones for the light heavyweight strap on Sept. 1, but the former PRIDE and Strikeforce champion was forced to withdraw just eight days prior to the event due to a knee injury.
Sonnen was tapped as a last-minute replacement, but “Bones” declined the fight and the event was ultimately cancelled.
Shortly after it was announced that Sonnen and Jones would be head coaching against each other on the upcoming season of TUF, Henderson tweeted that he was less than thrilled with the eventual Octagon showdown between the two:
“I guess I should just quit training to win fights and to be exciting for the fans and just go to sh** talking school.”
Sonnen, in a fan chat sponsored by MetroPCS on Tuesday, hinted that he may have some issues with his long-time training partner and friend. "I haven't spoken to him, but, um – I haven't spoken to Dan," he said. "We'll leave it at that."
The former two-time middleweight title challenger also stated that Henderson has helped him throughout his career so his involvement on TUF should not be a surprise.
MMA Junkie reports that Henderson joins a respected team of coaches.
This team includes Scott McQuary (head coach at Team Quest Tualatin), famed dietician Mike Dolce and decorated Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Vinny Magalhaes. UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture is also expected to appear help Sonnen’s team train from time to time.
With season 17 of TUF scheduled to film in the next few weeks, it appears that Sonnen is taking the head coaching gig very seriously.
