Former PRIDE and Strikeforce champion Dan Henderson has just one more piece of hardware to add to his collection to cap off his historic career: a UFC title.
If he has to fight long-time friend and training partner Chael Sonnen for the strap, well then so be it.
“Hendo” said as much in an interview with Brazilian MMA media outlet Tatame:
"We're friends, but above all we fight now in the same category and therefore have the same goal. We both compete for the same belt."
Granted, for the match up to happen, Henderson would have to defeat former 205-pound Lyoto Machida at UFC 157 next month, while Sonnen would need to snatch the light heavyweight belt from Jon Jones in April.
Nevertheless, the 42-year-old has no problem squaring off with “Uncle Chael” if that’s the way the cards fall.
"Our friendship is more than a title and we are professional enough to let the rivalry be just inside the Octagon. It would be a different situation, but our profession in this type of situation is quite possible to happen."
Henderson was vocal in voicing his displeasure when it was announced that Sonnen would coach the next season of “The Ultimate Fighter” opposite Jones and fight for the belt this spring, despite not competing as a light heavyweight in over six years.
Looks like the two top contenders but their differences aside though, as Henderson contributed to Sonnen’s team as an assistant coach.
Henderson vs. Sonnen: a fight worth seeing in the UFC’s 205-pound division?
