Looks like 2013 is picking up right where 2012 left off. Another injury has occurred in a high-profile bout scheduled for a UFC pay-per-view event.
Welterweight prospect Erick Silva has suffered an undisclosed injury, forcing him out of a UFC 157 main card match up with Jay Hieron. Top Strikeforce contender Tyron Woodley makes his Octagon debut as a late replacement for Silva.
The UFC’s official Twitter page made the announcement Wednesday evening.
Hieron made his return to the Octagon at UFC on FX 5 in October, losing a lackluster decision to contender Jake Ellenberger. Prior to that fight, “The Thoroughbred” has won 11 of his past 12 bouts.
On the other hand, Woodley was a perfect 10-0 heading into a Strikeforce welterweight title fight with Nate Marquardt in July, getting knocked out in the fourth round in a back-and-forth battle.
Woodley, a two-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler in college, has often been criticized for his takedown and top control-centric style, but has also shown the ability to lock up submissions and throw power punches when given the opportunity.
Silva was looking to regain momentum after losing a “Fight of the Night” effort against Jon Fitch at UFC 153 in October. He is 2-2 under the UFC banner, but one loss is a highly-disputed disqualification for strikes to the back of the head against Carlos Prater at UFC 142 last January.
