UFC lightweight Jeremy Stephens likely set a record this past weekend: by being the first fighter not able to make an Octagon appearance since they were stuck in jail.
MMA Fighting had the latest Tuesday morning, indicating that “Lil’ Heathen” was still being held in Hennepin County Jail in Minneapolis, Minnesota with a bail set at $100,000. His court date is set for Oct. 23 at 1:30 p.m., Central Time.
The Minneapolis Police Department arrested Stephens hours before the UFC on FX 5 event Friday, where Stephens was supposed to take on Yves Edwards, on warrants stemming from a 2011 assault incident in Des Moines, Iowa.
UFC president Dana White faced a ton of flak Friday evening for continually stating that Stephens would fight on the card, only for Stephens vs. Edwards to never come to fruition.
At the post-fight presser, White explained that the terms of Stephens release were repeatedly changed until the event had concluded and it was too late to negotiate.
On Monday, Stephens’ management team, Evolution Agent, put out a lengthy statement standing behind their athlete, noting that Stephens is innocent and has never been notified of the charge prior to Friday. The statement can be read in its entirety on MMA Junkie.
MMA Fighting also reports that the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Department, Polk County (in Iowa) Sheriff’s Department and the Des Moines Police Department said they would only release information in person or via a written records request.
Stephens is a UFC veteran with 14 Octagon appearances to his credit. Despite back-to-back losses to Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone, the heavy-handed lightweight looked to get back on track with a win over Edwards at Friday’s event.
This has been one of the most confusing situations in MMA in recent memory so fans and analysts alike are eager to see a definitive conclusion to the matter.
