Whoever thought a Twitter rally couldn’t work, apparently has never heard of UFC heavyweight contender Mark Hunt.
Thanks to utilizing social media, “The Super Samoan” will now fill in for Alistair Overeem against Junior dos Santos at UFC 160. MMA Fighting was the first media outlet to report the news on Saturday.
After the news broke that Overeem was out of his scheduled May bout with do Santos, Hunt encouraged his Twitter followers to ask UFC President Dana White to tap the former PRIDE star as a replacement.
The process wasn’t exactly smooth though, as White initially said he was going to wait for “The Reem” to heal and push back his fight with dos Santos for the summer.
He then rattled Hunt’s cage by telling a Twitter follower that the former K-1 level kickboxer actually turned down the match up with JDS.
However, White later revealed he had a “great conversation” with Hunt on Friday before announcing that dos Santos vs. Hunt would be happening after all.
After a rarely seen six-fight losing streak, Hunt has had a career renaissance, winning four in a row. Three of those victories came via knockout and Hunt earned “Knockout of the Night” honors on two of those occasions.
Dos Santos had won 10 straight fights before losing the UFC heavyweight title to Cain Velasquez at UFC 155 in December.
The winner of dos Santos-Hunt will more than likely fight the winner of the championship bout between Velasquez and Antonio Silva, who fight on the same card.
Can Hunt keep his Cinderella story alive or will dos Santos be able to stop the hype train in its tracks?
