Despite speculation of a trilogy bout between Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar, the original “Ultimate Fighter” winner will fight rising star Phil Davis at UFC 155. The UFC’s official Twitter page announced the news Friday morning.
“Forrest Griffin vs. Phil Mr. Wonderful Davis. December 29th. MGM Garden Arena. Write it down,” the tweet said.
Griffin needed a new opponent for the Dec. 29 event after Chael Sonnen was picked to coach opposite UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones for the next season of TUF. Sonnen will then face Jones in a title bout on April 27 and UFC president Dana White did not want “The American Gangster” to fight before then.
Davis is fresh off of a masterful submission victory over Wagner Prado at UFC 153, which took place on Oct. 13. “Mr. Wonderful” is 6-1 (with one no contest) in the UFC, with his sole loss coming at the hands of a former champion in Rashad Evans.
Meanwhile, Griffin has been on the shelf since winning a close decision over Tito Ortiz at UFC 148 in July. The Columbus, Ohio native is just 3-3 in his past six fights, with two of those victories coming at the expense of Ortiz.
Griffin’s cardio looked poor in his recent outing with “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy,” so he could be in for short night if he doesn’t bring his A-game against the highly-accomplished submission grappler.
Does Griffin have a real chance to win here or is this simply a “gimme” fight to get Davis back into title contention?
