UFC News: Couture Says Sonnen has a Great Chance to Beat Jones

UFC Hall of Famer “Captain America” Randy Couture believes his former training partner/protégé, Chael Sonnen, has a legitimate chance at dethroning UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

In a recent appearance on Spike TV’s MMA Uncensored Live (via MMA Fighting), Couture explained the one why he can see Sonnen upsetting Jones.

“Chael has a great opportunity to win this fight actually," Couture said. "Technically I see a similar style fight as Anderson Silva. If he wades through him and makes Jon Jones wrestle him the entire fight, I think he can win that…He can do it, but he needs that gameplan. He needs to make it a wrestling match, start to finish."

Sonnen and Jones were announced as the head coaches on season 17 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” culminating in a title bout in April. Despite a lack of big time wins at light heavyweight, UFC president Dana White explained that Sonnen earned the opportunity since no other contenders stepped up.

Sonnen proved his stock as a top tier UFC middleweight when he pushed 185-pound champion Anderson Silva to the brink at UFC 117 in Aug. 2010, controlling the champion for 4.5 rounds with his takedowns and top control.

Despite the admirable effort, Sonnen was submitted with a triangle choke mid-way through the fifth and final round.

Additionally, Couture supported the UFC’s call to give Sonnen the title shot in the first place, calling it a “business decision,” noting that Jones’ refusal to fight Sonnen on eight days notice at UFC 151 essentially made the fight inevitable.

Does Sonnen’s highly-developed skills give him a legitimate chance against a very well-rounded champion in Jones?
