Shots fired!
Upcoming UFC middleweight title challenger Vitor Belfort blasted current divisional kingpin Chris Weidman for being named “Fighter of the Year” for 2013 by the annual World MMA Awards on Saturday.
Speaking on Radio Beat 98, first reported by Brazilian media outlet Combate, “The Phenom” essentially called his American counterpart’s second victory over longtime titleholder Anderson Silva at UFC 168 a fluke.
"It was embarrassing," Belfort said on the radio show. "Not that it should've been me, but winning the award after just one fight? It's shameful. He won one fight. The other was [pretty much] accidental."
For the record, Belfort was also nominated for “Fighter of the Year.”
Weidman, the no. 6 pound-for-pound fighter in the world in the UFC’s official rankings, defeated “The Spider” in December after the Brazilian threw a hard leg kick that was checked.
The result was Silva’s shin hitting Weidman’s knee at full force, shattering his fibula and tibia.
Despite how gruesome the injury initially looked, Silva has already posted a video on his Instagram of being able to walk down the stairs and is also already back in the weight room.
Weidman’s first victory over Silva, snapping a 17-fight win streak, at UFC 162 in July wasn’t without controversy either.
While the New Yorker became the first fighter to knockout the legendary Silva in 38 professional fights, the victory was still tainted for some due to Silva’s excessive taunting and showboating throughout the title matchup.
Belfort, who is riding a three-fight win streak (all knockouts), squares off with Weidman at UFC 173 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 24.
The middleweight title tilt headlines the card.
