Wanderlei Silva Admits He Took Banned Diuretics at NSAC Hearing

UFC President Dana White may have been correct when he said the Nevada State Athletic Commission will “bury” Wanderlei Silva at their June 17 hearing.

Silva admitted through his attorney Ross Goodman that he was taking diuretics when a member of the NSAC showed up at his gym to collect a blood and urine sample on May 24.

The hearing was streamed on UFC Fight Pass and MMA Fighting provided a detailed rundown of how the future looks for “The Axe Murderer.”

"He was taking diuretics for the sole purpose of minimizing the inflammation, to decrease the water retention. He now realized that he should have submitted to the drug test,” Goodman said, also indicating Silva was rehabbing a wrist injury.

“ … That doesn't negate or minimize what Mr. Silva did. He's here to apologize to the commission, and he was concerned that the diuretics would show up on his sample."

Goodman also emphasized that Silva had never failed a drug test in his 49-fight career, noting he had never been asked to participate in a random drug test before May 24, either.

While the commission will not make a ruling until a later date, testimony indicated that Silva did indeed walk right out of his gym as he was asked to submit to a random drug test and Goodman did not dispute this recollection of events.

"As you can see, between [the collector] and myself, we made every possible concerted effort to have Mr. Silva administer a blood and urine sample to us, to which he did not,” said NSAC Executive Director Bob Bennett.

Bennett also recalled that Silva did not respond to text messages from himself or the sample collector after he had left the gym.

A failed drug test for banned substances typically elicits a suspension of at least nine months, though typically spans for at least one full calendar year.

The NSAC will likely regard a refused drug test in the same manner as a failed one, but only time will tell what sort of sanctions await the former PRIDE star.
