The Toronto Raptors received some horrible news on Monday. The team announced that All-Star point guard Kyle Lowry will undergo wrist surgery on Tuesday. Depending on how the sugary goes, Toronto is hopeful that Lowry will be able to retain in time for the playoffs.
Lowry, 30, is having another career season in 2016-17, averaging 22.8 points, 4.8 rebounds and 6.9 assists while shooting at a solid 46 percent clip.
From an on-court standpoint, this hurts big time. Not only is Lowry one of Toronto's two-best players, he was averaging a league-high 37.7 minutes per game at the time of the injury. Needless to say, the team doesn't have a reliable backup to shoulder the burden.
The starting point guard duties will now likely go to second-year player Delon Wright, who is averaging 6.5 points and shooting at a 48 percent clip from the field.
From a fantasy perspective, Lowry's absense seems to indicate that DeMar DeRozan will take on an even larger scoring role. DeRozan is averaging 27.7 points on 21.2 shots this season. Unfortunately, his ceiling is about where it's at now. DeRozan might shoot more, but that could make him a bulk scorer. Definitely not great when it comes to the fake basketball world.
