Golden Days in Golden State

Golden Days in Golden State

The Golden State Warriors seem to have found their coach for the foreseeable future. Whatever Steve Kerr has brought to that locker room has resulted in a furious start to the 2014-2015 NBA season, which has the Warriors riding a franchise record 16-game win streak. Kerr's squad has not lost a game since November 11 and is currently the best team in the NBA with an overall record of 21-2.

The Warriors were considered a contender before the season began, but this start was unexpected. After winning their first five games of the season, the Warriors lost two in a row to the Phoenix Suns and San Antonio Spurs. Some sort of mental breakdown resulted in uncharacteristic losses by 12 and 13 points, respectively. Nonetheless, after a tough opening schedule in which the Warriors faced Western Conference foes in the Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets, and Portland Trail Blazers, Steve Kerr guided his team to a 5-2 record overall. Not only did they beat each of those teams, the Warriors won by at least ten points in all but one of their first five wins. And after the two hiccups to the Suns and Spurs, the Warriors took off again, where they currently find themselves amidst the best win streak in team history.

While Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson got things going for the Warriors, the Splash Brothers have received help from a healthy mix of teammates. A big shooting forward in Draymond Green has emerged as piece that opposing teams must keep tabs on. Green is third on the team behind Thompson and Curry with 13.4 points per game. He is also averaging 8.0 rebounds per game, while alternating between shooting forward and power forward. Harrison Barnes has also played well and the return of Andrew Bogut has been huge for the starting lineup. Even with Bogut back on the sideline with a knee injury, the Warriors have had success playing with a smaller lineup. David Lee is also injured, but with those two healthy, the Warriors have the ability to match up against other Western Conference powers-many of which have not one, but two strong big men. The Warriors are third in the NBA in rebounding and are seventh in the league in points allowed. A strong defensive scheme coupled with high-powered scoring makes the Warriors the top power in the rankings. While the Memphis Grizzlies are also continuing a hot start to the season, the Splash Brothers and Co. are the NBA's true number one team.

Steve Kerr belittled his team's 21-2 record, when compared to the 1996 Chicago Bulls-a team that he played for-who went on the win 72 games. Without Michael Jordan that feat is nearly impossible but, with great team basketball, the Warriors are poised to give the '96 Bulls a run for their money. Two tough opponents await, with the first being the Memphis Grizzlies, who currently have the second-best record in the NBA at 19-4. The Warriors and Grizzlies meet for the first time this season on Tuesday and it will be intriguing to see if the Grizzlies can slow down Curry and Thompson, while the Warriors will be tasked with keeping Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph under wraps. The Warriors will then return home to face a resurgent Oklahoma City Thunder team that has won six consecutive games, riding the return of its two superstars.

In an overly competitive Western Conference, the Golden State Warriors are flying high and are the clear favorite to compete for the NBA title. Needing to win 17 more games without a loss in order to match the '71-72 Los Angeles Lakers for longest win streak in NBA history, the real grind will come when every team in the league moves the target from the Spurs to the Warriors. Nonetheless, Steve Kerr appears to be the bay area solution that may bring the Warriors their first title since 1975.
