Well, we’ve officially reached a level of absurdity many never thought possible. A professional team in a major four sports league has gone 19-0. There have been challengers along the way, of course, but all have fallen and now we are left with a team unblemished among its peers.
The Golden State Warriors have dazzled on their way to a record-breaking start this season, and the only question left is: when will this team finally lose? So let’s try to answer that question, shall we?
At- Charlotte (10-7)
The Warriors begin a six game, eastern conference road trip with a homecoming for Stephen Curry. Curry famously played his college ball at Davidson, a college in the suburbs of Charlotte. Do you really think he’s going to let this streak die in his hometown? Me neither. Golden State breezes through a surprising Charlotte Hornets team.
At- Toronto (11-7)
A tougher task awaits Golden State north of the border, where Curry and Co. will face a tough Raptors team led by a resurgent Kyle Lowry. The Raptors play excellent defense, but aren’t a great matchup against the Warriors and simply don’t have the depth to keep up with the second unit for Golden State. I think this one is much closer, but Golden State wins again.
At- Brooklyn (5-13)
Don’t let Brooklyn’s record fool you. Looking back at this streak, you could circle Golden State’s 107-99 overtime win over Brooklyn as the game they should have lost. Andre Iguodala hit a game-tying three with less than 10 seconds left after the Nets inexplicably didn’t foul up three, and then Brook Lopez missed a point-blank layup at the buzzer.
Of course, what I didn’t mention is that the Warriors were without Klay Thompson, who will be back for this game. The Warriors win again, this time in less exciting fashion.
At- Indiana (11-5)
Next up on the docket is the scorching Indiana Pacers. Led by Paul George, Indiana is a guard-heavy team that can score and defend, and it’s why they have risen to second in the eastern conference. If this version of Paul George is still around when Golden State rolls into town, it could spell trouble for the champs.
Out of any game left in the near future, especially on this road trip, the Pacers game is the one I’m circling as the night when the streak finally ends. It isn’t a certainty, of course, but the matchup is closer to even and Indy has a game-changing player that the others simply don’t.
But hey, 22-1 isn’t bad, right?
