NBA Fantasy Draft - Power Forwards Ranked 1-10

Continuing our analysis and ranking of the NBA’s power forwards, we move onto the top ten players at the position. Unlike the players ranked outside of the top ten, a fantasy GM really can’t go wrong with any guy here.

These top-tier talents should all get you 20+ ppg totals and contribute close to or over 10 rpg. A couple players will see their fantasy value slide a bit this year, as new players to their team will make it hard to duplicate previous averages.

If you could pick a ‘sleeper’ amongst the group, I would go with LaMarcus Aldridge from the Portland Trailblazers. He is poised for a great year and should be a consistent double-double player this season.

Here are Edraft's top ten power forwards:

1- Kevin Love – Minnesota Timberwolves
The revamped Timberwolves roster should allow for better scoring opportunities for Kevin Love. With the addition of Brandon Roy, Andrei Kirilenko and Alexey Shved; opposing defences will not be able to key solely on one player. The scoring and rebounding averages may dip slightly; however, the quality chances and shooting percentages should go up. Love is still the best-of-the-best at this position and definitely worthy of a first-round selection.

2- Blake Griffin – Los Angeles Clippers
Blake Griffin is without a doubt one of the more exciting ballers to watch. He is explosive, fierce and determined on the court. These same attributes that contribute greatly to his success also contribute to his demise, as he is highly susceptible to injury. The Clippers once again have a deep roster and I have to figure that they know how important it is to have a healthy Griffin come playoff time. I can’t imagine Griffin continuing to average over 36 minutes of action a night. I still see Griffin as the double-double machine and averaging over 20 ppg; just having to do it in less minutes.

3- LaMarcus Aldridge – Portland Trailblazers
This season could signify a breakout year for LaMarcus in Portland. There aren’t a lot of pieces surrounding him and he will be called upon to contribute mightily at both ends of the floor. He was solid last season with averages of 21.7 ppg and 8.0 rpg. This year could mark an improvement to 25 ppg and 11 rpg. Based on potential alone, I would draft Aldridge ahead of Griffin and Love, but if you are using a first or second round pick on a power forward you need a sure thing. If Griffin and Love are off your board, jump on LaMarcus Aldridge as your power forward.

4- Josh Smith – Atlanta Hawks
I like drafting guys who are in contract years, especially those who are supremely gifted and highly motivated to secure a max-contract. Josh Smith is just such a player. Last season will be hard to beat in terms of fantasy production, but Smith should come close to at least matching it. Another season with 18.8 ppg, 9.6 rpg and 3.9 apg will get him a fat new contract and you some nice fantasy points.

5- Zach Randolph – Memphis Grizzlies
Last season was a tough one for Zach Randolph; it was even harder on fantasy GM’s who drafted him. A partial tear in his ACL cost him all but 26 games of the season and when he returned he was understandably out of shape and without much feel for the ball. Early reports from training camp speak of Randolph being healthy and in good shape. Given a healthy and full season, Randolph will return to his 20 ppg and 11 rpg averages.

6- Amare Stoudemire – New York Knicks
Another player coming off an injury plagued season is Amare Stoudemire. A bulging disc in his back followed by hand lacerations limited his overall effectiveness. Playing within an offensive system that had an ill-fitting point guard wasn’t helping either. This year should be different and should see Stoudemire return to his glory. I’d look for Amare to be right around or even slightly better than his career averages of 21.6 ppg and 8.8 rpg.

7- Paul Millsap – Utah Jazz
The Utah Jazz have a nice little problem on their hands, two very good players who play the same position. Unfortunately for fantasy GM’s, having Derrick Favors waiting in the wings behind Millsap detracts from his fantasy value. It would seem that the Jazz are intent on having Favors take on an increased load this season. It remains to be seen just how Favors and Millsap will share the minutes. Millsap is still a tremendous talent, and a great fantasy producer. Millsap is also entering a contract year and could very well be showcased for a trade.

8- David Lee – Golden State Warriors
David Lee’s fantasy value could be hurt this season with the arrival of Andrew Bogut in Golden State. Coupled with the emergence of Klay Thompson in the backcourt, new draftee Harrison Barnes and the return of Stephen Curry; the offence seems to be geared towards perimeter players. Lee should still see enough of the ball to get about 18 ppg and about 8 rpg.

9- Dirk Nowitzki – Dallas Mavericks
This NBA veteran is preparing to enter his 15 season in the league and is said to be in much better shape than last season. Dirk struggled last year and was actually benched for a period of time to work on his conditioning. As a result of this, Nowitzki’s numbers took a hit. Expect Dirk to bounce back this season and produce around his career averages in points and rebounds. Still a top-tier talent at the position; just that there are others I would take ahead of him. Don’t let the name recognition sway you into using too high of a pick.

10- Pau Gasol – Los Angeles Lakers
The off-season acquisition of Dwight Howard is going to hurt Gasol’s fantasy value. There just aren’t going to be as many rebounds or put back scoring opportunities. With reports out of Los Angeles of the Lakers running a Princeton style offence; it is likely going to be Howard getting involved in the pick-and-rolls not Gasol. Gasol will need to work on that mid-range jumper as a lot of his looks will be top of the key jumpers. This season, Gasol will not be able to average 17.4 ppg and 10.4 rpg. I think something closer to 14.8 ppg and 8 rpg is more appropriate.
