NBA Preview - Miami Heat

2014-15 Review
The Miami Heat had a major post-Lebron James let down as they failed to make the playoffs in the weak Eastern Conference. Multiple contributing factors to this were of course the loss of Chris Bosh for an extended period of time, injuries to Dwyane Wade, poor play out Luol Deng and instability at the point guard position. While all those factors and more caused the failure that was the 2014-15 season; none of these factors are in play to start this season off.

New Additions

Gerald Green

Green was a nice signing for the Heat as he brings some tremendous athleticism and solid scoring punch to the team. Green will be a key bench player this season as he will provide some veteran stability and offence while allowing the Heat to rest Wade on nights.

Factor in the familiarity factor here as Green played with Goran Dragic in Phoenix and the learning curve and game flow should all come quickly for Green.

Amare Stoudemire

Despite being years past his prime, Stoudemire is a valuable veteran presence who will provide much needed depth coming off the bench. Stoudemire's addition here will help in spelling off minutes for guys like Hassan Whiteside. As this Heat team prepares for a playoff run the depth of the roster will be of huge help in monitoring the logged minutes of the starting unit.

Justise Winslow

The Miami Heat had to be sitting in disbelief on draft day as Winslow just kept sliding down the draft board and ultimately landing in their laps. If reports are to be believed, the Boston Celtics and Charlotte Hornets put together trade packages in hopes of prying the Heat's pick away all with the goal of drafting this young man.

There is a high likelihood that Winslow is an everyday starter for the Heat as his defense and ball handling skills will push the veterans for minutes immediately.

Key Losses

The Miami Heat really didn't lose anyone of significance...yet. Both Mario Chalmers and Chris Anderson are actively being shopped as salary dumps, but no takers yet. Miami will be aggressive in moving salary this season as they will want to be able to compete for Hassan Whiteside's services next year on the open market.

Biggest Strength

The biggest strength right now for the Miami Heat is their team health. Bosh has been cleared to resume basketball activities, Wade is being brought along slowly but figures to be ready for the season and Whiteside is being monitored and also figures ready to go for day one. If everyone can make it through training camps and preseason then Heat fans and management must be ecstatic at seeing what this team can do together.

Biggest Weakness

While the starting unit can certainly compare with anyone's, the weakness for the Heat starts and ends with their lack of depth. Due to some salary constraints and looming large contracts, the Heat haven't been able to acquire those veteran minimum players who add so much to a team come playoff time.

If the Heat are contending for a division title by the midpoint of the season, look for Pat Riley to scour the league for talent that will bolster the bench for the postseason.

Bottom Line

When healthy, the Miami Heat are a playoff team. They should challenge for a division title as Atlanta will need to catch lightning in a bottle two season in a row to duplicate their record from last year. It will be a battle, but look for Miami to eke out a division title here and with it that all important home-court advantage for at least the first-round. Bosh will be the player he was and Whiteside will continue his strong play, particularly when he and everyone else knows that it is a contract year for him.

Fantasy Slant

Most Overrated

Dwyane Wade
It is tough to call a player as great as Wade as being overrated for fantasy play, but one must consider the fact that he is an aging star with long history of knee injuries and who plays a bang and crash style of basketball. Miami will be looking after Wade this season, monitoring his minutes and by giving him nights off throughout the season. Wade will still put up decent numbers, but he really shouldn't be considered a top-tier fantasy talent any longer.

Most Underrated

Gerald Green

The secret is out on Whiteside so he can't be considered undervalued any longer. We now instead turn to Green to provide that value in a reserve role. Green can contribute nicely for this team and he will see a decent run of minutes in relief for Wade as the season progresses. FanDuel doesn't hold Green in high regard as he is valued quite low. Look for Green really assert himself this year and with it, outperform much of his fantasy expectations.
